About David Van Cleve, Information Officer U.S. Embassy France
David Van Cleve is the Information Officer and serves as the Embassy spokesman. This is his second tour in Paris. He served most recently in Budapest, where he split his time between being POL/ECON Counselor and Acting DCM. Before that he worked in Islamabad as the first FSO to run the Combatting Violent Extremism office. Immediately before that, David had a four year tour in Paris (2009-2013) where he attended the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (2009-2010) in Strasbourg and was Political Counselor (2010-2013). Previous overseas tours also include Warsaw, Budapest for the first time, and Singapore. In Washington, David has worked on the France Desk in EUR/WE, as the Special Assistant for the Policy Planning Staff (S/P) and for the Undersecretary for Political Affairs (Bill Burns). He also was a Pearson working for then Senator Joe Biden on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
In addition to ENA, David did his undergraduate work (including a year at Sciences Po) at Tufts University. He has an M.Sc. in International Relations from the London School of Economics, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School. Before the Foreign Service, he practiced law in San Francisco
